5. ASH CAVE

We’ll start this list with the least strenuous hike, perfect for all ages! Ash Cave is one of the Hocking Hills most popular attractions, and for good reason! This is Ohio’s largest recess cave, 700 feet wide and 90 feet tall! Ash Cave is impressive no matter the season, however it really shines in the winter and spring. During some cold winters the waterfall will freeze from top to bottom. Spring time brings some enormous flows. A true sight to behold!

We recommend: This hike is perfect for kids! During warm summer months we sometimes bring our toddler here with his beach toys to play in the cool, soft sand deposited inside the cave. The perfect way to spend an afternoon!

4. BIG SPRING HOLLOW

Big Spring Hollow is another short and easy hike that will lead you to a waterfall that must be seen! During the spring season or after a big rain is the best time to visit, just as with all the waterfalls on this list. Located in the Hocking Hills Repelling Area, its one of the lesser known must-see sights in the area. Simply park in the Bridal Trail parking lot on Big Pine Road, cross the road and small bridge, and it’s just a short hike to this magical location!

This is The Hocking Hills tallest waterfall at over 100 feet, and when the water gets flowing, you’ll hear it crashing from the end of the hollow.

We recommend: Pack a picnic! the large rocks at the base of the falls are perfect for a relaxing lunch. Just be sure to pack out your trash!

3. SHEICK HOLLOW

Sheick Hollow is magical! What makes this waterfall so special is the journey you’ll take to get there.

Hiking Sheick Hollow will most likely find you alone with your party, as it is not very well known, and requires a permit from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. You will park on the road and follow a faint trail crossing the creek that carved this hollow many times. Wear waterproof boots or something you don’t mind getting wet! The trails winds between towering cliffs in what feels like a forest, completely cut off from the rest of the world. Eventually, toward the end of the hollow you’ll come to a few boulders that have fallen into the creek. Many explorers will stop here and head back to the trailhead, but push on, navigate the boulders, and you will be rewarded with one of The Hocking Hills’ most beautiful waterfalls.

We recommend: PLAN AHEAD! If you are planning a trip to the Hocking Hills, be sure to check out what Nature Preserves you might be interested in and apply for the permits! They don’t take super long to be obtained but if you are already in the hills, it’s probably too late! Little Rocky Hollow is another of our favorite preserves!

2. Old Man’s Cave UPPER & LOWER FALLS

There’s a reason Old Man’s Cave is the most visited attraction in the Hocking Hills… there are more spectacular sites in this short hike than we can count, and it’s bookended by two picturesque waterfalls.

Most folks will enter the trails at the Upper Falls, but many will miss the Lower Falls by exiting the ravine at the actual “Old Man’s Cave”. Stay on the Grandma Gatewood Trail past Old Man’s Cave and you will descend to the bottom the Lower Falls.

No trip to the Hocking Hills is complete without this hike!

We recommend: This is a VERY popular hike! The best times to visit are early weekday mornings!
